Résumé: In this paper I look at the theory of the « purposes/objectives of shari’a » which is often viewed as a panacea for modern reformers and ask what would be required for « modern » religious freedom (secular, liberal, Western conceptions of religious freedom) to fulfill the basic « shari’a objective » of preserving religion.
