Résumé

Most survivable emissions pathways laid out by the IPCC include “negative emissions”, the drawdown of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by a variety of means from tree planting to advanced technologies yet to be created. Many people have decried negative emissions as a distraction from the most urgent thing we should be doing (reducing new emissions and replacing fossil fuels as energy sources) or a moral hazard (benefitting ourselves in the short term by deferring costs to others in the future). And yet, there is a strong scientific case for developing technological means of carbon drawdown as soon as possible, in concert with emissions reduction. I will offer an opinionated review of the debate around carbon drawdown, which has advanced rapidly with the development of promising new drawdown and mineralization technologies, but where many uncertainties, both ethical and scientific, remain.
