Subjectivism, Instrumentalism, and Prudence in Hobbes
I will argue that Hobbes was neither a subjectivist nor an instrumentalist about normative reasons. The argument serves to show why it is a mistake to construe, as much of the contemporary metaethics literature (eg Parfit) does, instrumentalism as a form of subjectivism about reasons.
