Résumé:
This paper considers the distinction between group pluralism and group accommodation. The presence and influence of group pluralism might be indicated by courts relinquishing jurisdictional authority to other groups such as churches and Indigenous communities. By contrast, group accommodation indicates an expansive role for the state which, in the course of integrating minority groups, may legitimately shape and limit their practices.  Here I consider what the distinction between pluralism and accommodation looks like in practice and in relation to recent conflicts over religious education. I then consider whether a third type of authority, namely relational authority,  better captures the relation between some groups and the state in diverse societies.
