Investigation of a Citizen Beyond Suspicion (1970, Elio Petri)

It is a dramatic, psychological, black-humored satire on corruption in high office, telling the story of a top police officer who kills his mistress, and then tests whether the police would charge him for this crime. He begins manipulating the investigation by planting obvious clues while the other police officers ignore them, either intentionally or not. But all is not as it seems. While the killer may have an inside track on fabricating his own innocence, he also seems to be testing the competence and integrity of Italian law enforcement.

Il s’agit d’une satire dramatique, psychologique et noire sur la corruption dans les hautes fonctions, qui raconte l’histoire d’un haut fonctionnaire de police qui tue sa maîtresse, puis teste si la police l’inculperait pour ce crime. Il commence à manipuler l’enquête en plantant des indices évidents tandis que les autres policiers les ignorent, intentionnellement ou non. Mais tout n’est pas comme il y paraît. Si le tueur a peut-être une piste pour fabriquer sa propre innocence, il semble également tester la compétence et l’intégrité des forces de l’ordre italiennes.
