Biography
Michaël Lessard is particularly interested in how private law addresses vulnerable or marginalized individuals, using critical approaches to explore these issues. His current research focuses on sexual and domestic violence, animal rights, multi-parenthood, medical assistance in dying, and the theoretical foundations of private law.
Holding a double degree in civil law and common law from McGill University, he worked as a law clerk at the Quebec Court of Appeal before pursuing a master’s in legal theory at New York University and a PhD in law at the University of Toronto. He has been a member of the Quebec Bar since 2016. Before joining the Faculty of Law at the University of Sherbrooke in 2023 as a professor, Michaël Lessard completed a research fellowship at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Animal Rights Law.
