Three CRÉ co-researchers elected as members of the Royal Society of Canada
Three CRÉ co-researchers are part of the 2024 cohort of newly elected members of the Royal Society of Canada. Congratulations to Arash Abizadeh (McGill), Marie-Josée Drolet (UQTR), and Daniel Weinstock (McGill)! Congratulations to David Koussens (UdeS), who was elected College member of the RSC.
“One hundred four new Fellows have been elected by their peers for their outstanding scholarly achievements. This recognition by the RSC is the highest honour in the Arts, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Sciences.

Arash ABIZADEH (Academy of social sciences)
Arash Abizadeh is R.B. Angus Professor of Political Science and Associate Member of the Department of Philosophy at McGill University. He received his BA(Hon) from the University of Winnipeg, MPhil from Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, and PhD from Harvard. His research focuses on democratic theory; identity, nationalism, and cosmopolitanism; immigration and border control; social and political power; and 17th and 18th century philosophy, especially Hobbes and Rousseau.
Marie-Josée DROLET (Academy of arts and humanities)
A Full Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Marie-Josée Drolet is an internationally renowned professor-researcher in the field of applied ethics in occupational therapy and health. A philosopher and occupational therapist by training, she is highly sought locally, nationally and internationally for her unique expertise in the field of ethics and the high quality and originality of her work and thinking. As she has published in English and French with fellow researchers from across North America, Europe and Oceania, her work is widely known.
Daniel WEINSTOCK (Academy of arts and humanities)
Daniel Weinstock holds the Katharine A. Pearson Chair in Civil Society and Public Policy at McGill University, where he holds appointments in the Faculty of Law, the Department of Philosophy, the Max Bell School of Public Policy, and the School of Population and Global Health. He has published widely in a broad range of topics in moral, political, and legal philosophy. In 2023, he was inducted into the Order of Canada.
David KOUSSENS
David Koussens is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Law at the Université de Sherbrooke. A multidisciplinary jurist, he has held the Law, Religion, and Secularism Research Chair since 2012. His work, which has earned him international recognition and numerous awards in Canada and abroad, explores the evolution of the legal models of secularism and the management of religious pluralism in liberal democracies. He has published L’épreuve de la neutralité (Bruylant, 2015) and Secularism(s) in Contemporary France (Springer, 2023).
