This paper explores the following question: can borders be feminist? I argue, first, that many borders are understood, constructed, and violently enforced as “public” and colonial institutions. Such visions of borders, I argue, preclude them from being feminist and otherwise undermine social justice at borders. I go on to argue, however, that we need not accept a theory of borders that is based upon the public/private dichotomy to which feminist political theorists have long objected. We can, instead, consider alternative visions of borders—such as those associated with certain feminist and Indigenous bordering practices—and then put them to the service of feminist, decolonial, and humanitarian objectives. Finally, I explore two additional questions: (1) why would we want a feminist theory of borders in the first place? and (2) what should we want from a feminist theory of borders?
