As part of the Graduate Fellows Lunchtime Seminar, the Social Justice Centre in collaboration with the CRÉ welcomes a talk by Dean Joseph.
Title: « Nonabsolutism and Social Change »
Description: Dean is working on normative ethics and his research focuses on the stringency and flexibility of ethical principles in nonideal theory. A nonideal world calls for social transformation: a restructuring project of the status quo social order which seeks to ameliorate currently poor conditions and attempts to fulfill, with consideration to feasibility, principles and demands of justice to the greatest possible degree. His goal is to provide a normative tool, applicable to social projects and movements seeking to bring about social transformation, which maximizes the feasibility of bringing about a better world while remaining morally permissible.
Dean Joseph is a graduate student in the Philosophy Department at Concordia and a graduate student fellow at the CRÉ.
The talk will be followed by a commentary by Pablo Gilabert (Professsor, Department of Philosophy)

Titre : « Nonabsolutisme et changement social »
Description : Dean Joseph travaille sur l’éthique normative et sa recherche se concentre sur la rigueur et la flexibilité des principes éthiques dans la théorie non idéale. Un monde non idéal appelle une transformation sociale : un projet de restructuration de l’ordre social et du statu quo qui cherche à améliorer les conditions actuelles et tente de satisfaire, en tenant compte de la faisabilité, les principes et les exigences de la justice dans la mesure du possible. Son objectif est de fournir un outil normatif, applicable aux projets sociaux et aux mouvements cherchant à provoquer une transformation sociale, qui maximise la faisabilité d’un monde meilleur tout en restant moralement acceptable.
Dean Joseph est un étudiant à la maîtrise au département de philosophie de l’université Concordia et un boursier d’études supérieures au CRÉ.
La conférence sera suivie d’un commentaire de Pablo Gilabert (professeur au département de philosophie, Concordia).
