Is neuroimaging the next tool of predictive medicine? The potentials and ethical perils of fMRI in Psychiatry.

Résumé:

With the emergence of functional imaging over the last 15 years there has been a surge of studies investigating brain function in healthy individuals. Increasingly, this tool has been extended to explore pathological conditions, including psychiatric illnesses. Unfortunately, functional neuroimaging is technologically complicated, practiced largely without standardization, and is vulnerable to overinterpretation. Difficulties in the interpretation and in the meaning of results becomes an even larger threat in patient populations, where studies may lead to the development of new but premature clinical practices. Indeed, the potential of applying functional neuroimaging to the clinical diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders brings about many ethical challenges which will be discussed.
