Résumé:

This paper examines the prospects for grounding a theory of what we owe to individuals with disabilities in a republican notion of freedom-as-nondomination. Briefly reviewing a number of recent attempts to accommodate the demands of disabled persons from within liberal theories of justice, I argue the case for adopting a republican perspective which gives priority to the notion of protecting all individuals against the possibility of arbitrary interference by other individuals, groups and even the state. I illustrate the salience of domination/nondomination in the living experience of people with disabilities, and demonstrate how republican freedom captures much of what disability rights advocates have urged for as a matter of priority in the disability policy debates of the past two decades. At the same time, the paper identifies a number of challenges that arise from within the republican perspective: concerns that republicans themselves must safeguard against to make good on their promise to ensure freedom-from-domination for disabled citizens.
