Abstract:
One of the fundamental disputes underlying current approaches to justice within political philosophy concerns the idea of natural injustice, and in particular whether this idea is or is not part of our idea of justice. The aim of this paper is to trace the origin of this dispute and to show that it ties in with different models of moral responsibility. I will show that as soon as we carefully analyse the temporal aspects of different conceptions of moral responsibility, it becomes clear that the conception of justice backed by the friends of natural injustice involves a link to agency and responsibility, but in a different way from that considered by their opponents, namely looking to the future. Given the results of the temporal analysis, it turns out that even contractualists who base their conception of justice on the second person standpoint could endorse the idea of natural injustice.
