Sa présentation s’intitulera: « Reproductive Autonomy and Downstream Generations »
Abstract:
Determining the bounds of reproductive autonomy is a thorny task, but one that must be undertaken especially in light of reproductive technologies lying on the horizon. Key to establishing what kinds of reproductive acts are permissible is determining (a) who, if anyone, stands to be wronged by a particular reproductive decision and (b) which individuals are morally responsible for this wrong. In this paper I argue that plausible approaches to answering these questions have the counter-intuitive effect of discounting the importance of possible downstream harms that might result from reproductive acts. This result has important consequences for policy, as will be demonstrated through an analysis of a recent recommendation made by the IOM for regulating mitochondrial replacement technologies.
