Silent Heterogeneity and Ethical Issues in ‘-Omics’ Technologies: Shifting from Pharmacogenomics to Proteomics
Résumé
High-throughput ‘-omics’ technologies bring about a systems biology perspective to biomedical innovation, drug discovery and development as well as the diagnostic industry. In this new research paradigm, different -omics biomarker technologies ( e.g., genomics and proteomics) are intended to be used in an integrated manner. Yet applications of these promising technologies remain compartmentalized in different technology silos and by stakeholders with different research priorities, motivations and commercial interests. This presentation will describe ethical issues associated with -omics technologies while taking into account the bioscience nuances (Do genes and proteins pose different ethical issues?).
